Postcard 1920s RPPC Roma Il Pantheon Rome Italy E. Richter Unused

Rome, Italy1925RPPCGood

Horse-drawn carriages queue before the Macuteo obelisk and the Baroque dolphin fountain of the Piazza della Rotonda while pedestrians in overcoats and dark suits drift across the worn cobblestones in front of the Pantheon's monumental portico — its inscription "M·AGRIPPA·L·F·COS·TERTIVM·FECIT" carved sharp against a pale sky — in a superb silver-gelatin real-photo postcard that captures Rome in the interwar years, when the automobile was just beginning to displace the calèche. Published by E. Richter of Rome (card no. 30), a distinguished Roman photographic publisher active in the early twentieth century, this large-format RPPC offers remarkable tonal depth and architectural detail rarely achieved in the lithographic postcards of the same era. The back is entirely blank — unused, unaddressed — preserving the card in pristine condition. The presence of horse-drawn carriages alongside early motor vehicles and the clothing styles firmly place this image in the 1920s, during Mussolini's early regime when Rome's ancient monuments were being dramatically cleared of surrounding medieval accretions.
