Ten miniature windows onto one of England's most beloved holiday islands — this multiview real-photo card from the "Bay" Series arranges views of Shanklin's thatched old village, the needle-sharp chalk stacks off the western tip, Sandown Bay's sweeping shoreline, Osborne House (Queen Victoria's cherished retreat), Carisbrook Castle's medieval gatehouse, and more into an elegant portrait-format composition, postmarked Sandown on 5 August 1948, just three years after the war's end when British seaside holidays were resuming with particular joy. The sender — whose message begins "Dear all, Hope you…" and references "little Wifey" and "Granny" — was clearly a holidaymaker sharing the island's pleasures with family back home in Salford, Lancashire.
