Postcard RPPC Countisbury Hill Lynmouth Devon England Aerial View c1920s

Lynmouth, Devon, England1925RPPCGood

Perched impossibly high above the Bristol Channel, this stunning real-photo aerial view of Countisbury Hill looks down upon Lynmouth's rooftops, winding cart tracks, and a grand hillside hotel complex — likely the Tors Hotel — clinging to the steep Devon hillside with the silver ribbon of the East Lyn River visible below. Taken from a vantage point on the cliffs of Exmoor, the photograph captures the vertiginous drama that made Lynmouth one of Victorian and Edwardian England's most beloved resort destinations, famously described by the poet Shelley as "the most beautiful place I have ever seen." The village's tragic fate in the catastrophic flood of August 1952 makes pre-disaster images like this especially poignant and collectible; the valley visible at lower frame was utterly transformed by that disaster. The card back carries the "British Manufacture" legend and "This is a Real Photograph" guarantee — hallmarks of quality RPPC production from the interwar period.
