Postcard Tower Bridge London Drawbridge Open c1905 Auto-Photo Series

London, England1905Pre-linenFair-Good

The bascules of Tower Bridge are raised wide open in this dramatic early-twentieth-century view, a rare action shot that captures the Gothic Revival towers and the high-level walkway silhouetted against a pale sky — with sailing barges and a faint London skyline stretching toward the horizon behind. Tower Bridge had opened only in 1894, making this image practically fresh off the press; the "Auto-Photo Series" imprint places it squarely in the Edwardian golden age of postcard collecting when tourists and locals alike mailed such views by the millions. The card is unused and unaddressed, still carrying the divided-back format that became standard in Britain from 1902, with the left panel reserved for "printed or written matter" — a layout that would have been excitingly modern to its first owner.
