Postcard 1910 Mrs Alcott Room Orchard House Concord MA Maynard Workshop

Concord, Massachusetts, USA1910Pre-linenGood

Hushed and spare, the interior of Abigail May's room at Orchard House in Concord, Massachusetts radiates the quiet dignity of a New England literary shrine — a Windsor rocking chair sits near the window, braided oval rugs soften the bare floor, and a high-chest mirror reflects the pale light filtering through lace curtains. Orchard House was the Alcott family home from 1858 to 1877, where Louisa May wrote Little Women at a small shelf-desk her father built for her; this card immortalises her mother Abigail's — "Marmee's" — adjoining room. Published by the Maynard Workshop of Waban, Massachusetts under its charming "The City" Post Cards imprint, the card was produced for the site's early museum operation, which began welcoming pilgrims almost immediately after the family's tenure. The photographic credit in the lower left of the image reads Fandl (partially legible), suggesting a local commercial photographer. An unused, clean example in very presentable condition.
