Postcard 1924 RPPC Florence Italy Arno River Ponte S. Trinità Firenze

Florence, Italy1924RPPCGood

Silhouetted against the calm mirror of the Arno, rowboats drift lazily past Florence's medieval riverside palazzi in this evocative 1924 real-photo postcard — a summer snapshot of la dolce vita before mass tourism changed the city forever. The view, catalogued as No. 66 in the Alinari series, captures the dense, organic skyline of the Lungarno with the graceful arch of the Ponte Santa Trinità just visible at right, its stones still intact a full two decades before German forces blew it up in 1944. A second enlargement image reveals two figures in a laden wooden skiff, the grand rusticated façade of a riverside palazzo looming behind them, its arched ground-floor openings reflecting in the still brown water. On August 4, 1924, a traveller named Dot dashed off a breathless note from the Hotel on the back: she had joined a group touring at a furious pace — "trying to see 500 things in 5 weeks" — missed a rendezvous in Madrid, visited a friend's sisters in Spain, and had only just reunited with her companions back in Florence, calling the whole adventure "a long story… the adventure of a lifetime." The card was addressed to Florence in Rochester, New York, bearing a 60-centesimi Italian stamp of King Victor Emmanuel III.
