Postcard 1964 Donkey Cart Race St Croix USVI Chrome Used Harry Stringer

St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands1964ChromeGood

Red-and-white pennants snap in the Caribbean breeze as three donkey-cart teams thunder off the starting line on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands — riders crouched over their carts, whips raised, the crowd pressed behind a striped canopy marquee in a scene of joyful, sun-drenched island sport. The annual Donkey Cart Race was held each February 22nd, organised by the St. Croix Jonkey Club, with proceeds benefiting island charities — a beloved tradition photographed here by Jerome Zerbe, the celebrated society photographer. The card was mailed in 1964 from Christiansted, St. Croix, bearing a 6¢ U.S. Air Mail stamp, addressed to Harry at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The sender — signing as Dede Lee — writes warmly about missing the races, island gossip, a friend named Sam who "had some illness," and sends a big hello to "all the Stringers," painting a vivid picture of a well-connected Washington press world correspondent holidaying in the Caribbean.
