Postcard 1923 California Lodge No.1 F&AM Masonic San Francisco June Bulletin

San Francisco, California, USA1923Pre-linenFair-Good

A rare surviving piece of Masonic ephemera from San Francisco's most storied lodge — California Lodge No. 1, Free and Accepted Masons, organized November 15, 1849, just months after the Gold Rush transformed the city — this June 1923 monthly bulletin booklet crackles with the fraternal energy of the Jazz Age. The cover bears the lodge's beehive seal and a June calendar with Thursday meetings highlighted in red, including the June 28 "Degree Teams Competition — Finals" annotated with a hand-drawn red caret for emphasis. Inside, two sections are marked with red X's: "Final Competition" and "Presidio Challenges," noting that Presidio Lodge No. 354 had formally challenged California Lodge's winning team to a Third Degree Work competition in September. The bulletin also mourns the passing of Dr. T. Fletcher and Capt. Winfield Scott Williams — a WWI veteran who earned the French Croix de Guerre in "several major operations" — and welcomes the birth of Miss Nancy Street to Bro. Charles. The officer roster names Worshipful Master Charles Arthur Marwedel, meeting at the Masonic Temple, Van Ness Avenue and Oak Street, San Francisco.
