Postcard 1907-1915 Dunkirk High School Dunkirk NY S.H. Knox & Co.

Dunkirk, New York, United States1910Pre-linenGood

Towering above the leafy streets of Dunkirk, New York, in proud Romanesque Revival brick, the Dunkirk High School is immortalized in this warm-toned color-lithograph postcard from the early Golden Age of American picture postcards — a monument to the civic ambition of a small Lake Erie industrial city at the height of its prosperity. The building's soaring clock tower with its copper-domed lantern and sweeping Palladian window facade speaks to the era's belief that public education deserved architecture as grand as any courthouse or church. Published expressly for S. H. Knox & Company — the celebrated five-and-dime chain with deep roots in Buffalo and the western New York region — this unused card is numbered 11299 and carries the standard Knox undivided-style back format noting domestic postage at one cent. The trees lining the approach are young and freshly planted, dating the image to the school's early decades.
