Postcard c1908 Chautauqua Institution NY Pier Men's Club Lake Couple UDB

Chautauqua, New York, USA1908Pre-linenExcellent

A couple in Edwardian finery — he in a dark suit, she in a billowing white dress and broad-brimmed hat — stand together at the rocky lakeside edge of Chautauqua Lake, gazing across the shimmering water toward the grand Men's Club building and pier, its clock tower flying an American flag in the rosy evening light; it is a scene of effortless gentility that perfectly captures the refined summer-resort atmosphere of the Chautauqua Institution, the remarkable adult-education community founded in 1874 on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in western New York. This colorized postcard, printed in Germany for the Chautauqua Press and carrying the Institution's 1874 seal on the reverse, dates to the undivided-back era (c.1906–1908) judging by the "For Correspondence only / For Address only" divided layout that was transitional — the front text says "POST CARD" in large type and stamp box reads "Domestic 1c / Foreign 2c," consistent with the 1907–1910 window. The soft hand-tinted palette — pinks, teals, and warm greens — typifies the German chromolithographic postcards that flooded the American market in the golden age of postal correspondence. Unused and clean.
