Postcard 1910 Riverside Park Hudson River NYC Used Mailed to Los Angeles CA

New York City, New York, USA1912Pre-linenFair-Good

Steam vessels and what appear to be naval warships crowd the broad Hudson River in this animated color-lithograph view from Riverside Park, the elegant Manhattan greenway designed by Frederick Law Olmsted — a well-dressed woman pauses on the terraced path while the palisades of New Jersey rise in the hazy distance, making this a vivid snapshot of the city's waterfront at the height of the steamboat age. The card carries a crisp Newport, Rhode Island machine cancel and was addressed to a Mr. H.L. E. Jr. at a Commonwealth Avenue address in Los Angeles, California, with a handwritten message on the left panel mentioning Riverside Drive and making comparisons to "the finest" residential districts — the writer clearly a booster. The printed description on the back touts lots fronting the Drive as worth $1,200 per square foot, a period real-estate flourish. A Scott #331 or #343 1-cent green Washington stamp (depending on watermark) ties the postmark.
