Postcard 1920s Linen Clifton Springs NY Sanitarium Tichnor Quality Views

Clifton Springs, New York, USA1935LinenExcellent

Twin copper-capped towers pierce a canopy of mature elms above the warm brick facade of the Clifton Springs Sanitarium — a landmark resort-style health institution that drew the ailing and the hopeful to upstate New York for decades. Founded in 1850 by Dr. Henry Foster, who harnessed the town's sulfur springs for hydrotherapy, the sanitarium grew into one of the most celebrated therapeutic retreats of its era, its grand red-brick bulk photographed here when a row of early automobiles still lined the shaded boulevard out front. Tichnor Brothers' signature linen printing gives the scene its characteristically saturated greens and warm terra-cottas, lending the building an almost fairy-tale solidity. The reverse carries the publisher's crisp booster copy — "today it holds a leading place among institutions of its kind" — a phrase that doubles as a quiet advertisement for the kind of progressive, morally respectable medicine that Foster, a deeply religious man, championed throughout his life.
