Antique & Vintage Postcards

Flags of Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland, and a half-dozen other nations snap in the Atlantic wind before the clean white Modernist façade of the Hótel Saga in Reykjavík — Iceland's premier international hotel when this chrome-era postcard was produced in the 1960s. A period Volvo Amazon (or similar Scandinavian sedan) glides past the entrance as a uniformed doorman stands at attention, the building's glass-curtain-wall and perforated concrete panels radiating the optimistic International Style that swept post-war Scandinavia. Published by Solarfilma s.f. of Reykjavík and printed by Grafik (the Íslenzk framleiðsla — "Icelandic production" — mark proudly displayed), this is No. 24 in their series. The Hótel Saga opened in 1965 and for years served as the de facto base for diplomats, journalists, and the growing wave of visitors drawn to Iceland's volcanic landscapes; it remains operational today as part of the Icelandair Hotels group. Unused and crisp.
