Postcard c1903 St Helena Public Gardens Fountain Dog UPU Stamp EDVII Used

Jamestown, St. Helena, South Atlantic1904Pre-linenFair-Good

A scruffy black dog drinks from an ornate tiered Victorian fountain in the Public Gardens of St. Helena — that impossibly remote South Atlantic island where Napoleon spent his final years — while two figures in white colonial dress stand chatting in the middle distance, utterly unaware they are being immortalized on a postcard destined for a Dr. in St. Louis, Missouri. Published under copyright by T. Jackson and mailed as "Printed Matter" via the Union Postale Universelle, this Edwardian-era card bears a St. Helena 1d rose King Edward VII stamp and a St. Helena postmark, making it a multi-layered philatelic and topographical treasure from one of the world's most isolated territories. The undivided-back format and UPU printed matter designation firmly date this card to approximately 1902–1906.
