Postcard Memphis Egypt Sphinx RPPC c1930s Boy Atop Ruins Palm Trees No.750

Memphis (Mit Rahina), Egypt1930RPPCGood

A barefoot boy perches cross-legged atop the battered limestone head of the alabaster sphinx at Mit Rahina (ancient Memphis), gazing out over the palm-grove gardens while tourists on a decorated donkey pass in the middle distance — a spontaneous human tableau that transforms what might have been a routine antiquities postcard into a vivid slice of Egyptian daily life in the interwar years. The sphinx at Memphis, discovered partly submerged and dating to around 1400 BCE, is one of the largest ancient sphinx sculptures in Egypt; its weathered, faceless grandeur is all the more striking here, framed by feathery palm crowns under a bright Egyptian sky. Card number 750 appears in the lower right of the image, suggesting a professional photographic series. The real-photograph printing is exceptionally sharp, with fine tonal gradation capturing the pitting and erosion of the ancient limestone. No publisher imprint is visible on the blank reverse, consistent with wholesale photographic postcard production common in Egypt in the 1920s–1940s.
