A swirling tableau of Balkan folk life leaps from this richly chromolithographed art postcard — a color reproduction of "Игра са ханџаром" (Dance with the Yatagan / Sword Dance) by celebrated Serbian realist painter Paja Jovanović, depicting a blindfolded dancer whirling between crossed blades while musicians, warriors, and onlookers crowd a torchlit stone interior in a scene of exhilarating tension and ethnographic authenticity. Jovanović (1859–1957) was the defining painter of Serbian national Romanticism, renowned for his monumental canvases of Balkan warriors, Ottoman-era customs, and Serbian heroic subjects; his work appeared frequently as art postcards in the Austro-Hungarian publishing trade. This card, numbered 447, was printed by the Štamparski-Umjetnički Zavod Pahera i Kisića in Mostar — a leading Austro-Hungarian fine-arts printing establishment in Bosnia-Herzegovina — and the back carries multilingual correspondence-card text in Cyrillic, German (Correspondenz-Karte), Hungarian (Levelező-Lap), and Serbian (Dopisna karta), reflecting the polyglot imperial postal system of the era.
