Postcard c1910 RPPC Dubrovnik Ragusa Placa Stradone Weiss Publisher

Dubrovnik (Ragusa), Croatia (then Austria-Hungary)1910Pre-linenExcellent

A hushed morning on the Stradone — Dubrovnik's great limestone promenade — unfolds in silver halftone: a woman in full skirts and a boy in shorts saunter past the ornate Renaissance façade of the Sponza Palace, while the bell tower of the Dominican Church pierces a cloud-streaked Adriatic sky and a lone electric globe lamp sways on its wire above the street. Published under the historic Austro-Hungarian name "Ragusa," this pre-linen real-photo-style card by the celebrated local house of Weiss dates to roughly 1905–1915, when Dubrovnik was still part of the Dalmatian crownland of Austria-Hungary and tourists arrived by Lloyd steamship. The back is unused and pristine — blank save for a faint penciled notation — bearing only the elegant quatrefoil "Wi / WEISS / RAGUSA" blindstamp that collectors prize. The Stradone itself has changed remarkably little; comparing this image to the street today is a small act of time travel.
