François Rude's monumental sculptural group La Marseillaise is dramatically visible on the arch's right pier, and the card carries a handwritten German Christmas greeting on the reverse — sent by someone signing as "Walburg" to a recipient named Alfred in Zittau, Saxony, Germany. The front bears a handwritten inscription in German script reading "Eine heilige Nächte in Paris zur Erinnerung" (roughly: "A holy night in Paris, in remembrance"). Published under the "Mona" imprint and bearing a French 90-centime Pasteur definitive stamp, this is a rich cross-cultural document: a French monument card, mailed at Christmas by a German speaker in Paris to a German address, carrying one of the more desirable interwar French stamp issues.
