Postcard 1929 Arc de Triomphe Paris France Mona Series German Message

Paris, France1929Pre-linenGood

Beneath a canopy of Champs-Élysées plane trees, vintage automobiles and a lone pedestrian animate the broad Place de l'Étoile in this striking sepia-tone view of the Arc de Triomphe, posted from Paris on 24 December 1929. François Rude's monumental sculptural group La Marseillaise is dramatically visible on the arch's right pier, and the card carries a handwritten German Christmas greeting on the reverse — sent by someone signing as "Walburg" to a recipient named Alfred in Zittau, Saxony, Germany. The front bears a handwritten inscription in German script reading "Eine heilige Nächte in Paris zur Erinnerung" (roughly: "A holy night in Paris, in remembrance"). Published under the "Mona" imprint and bearing a French 90-centime Pasteur definitive stamp, this is a rich cross-cultural document: a French monument card, mailed at Christmas by a German speaker in Paris to a German address, carrying one of the more desirable interwar French stamp issues.
