Postcard Chamonix Hotel des Etrangers France Alps Photo Monnier RPPC

Chamonix, Haute-Savoie, France1910Pre-linenGood

The grand façade of the Hôtel des Étrangers dominates this evocative early view of Chamonix's main street, its bold painted signage and striped café awnings beckoning Alpine travellers against a dramatic backdrop of Mont Blanc massif cliffs rising almost vertically behind the town. A horse-drawn cart rounds the corner while a handful of figures stroll the café terrace in what appears to be an off-season quiet — the high summer crowds not yet arrived. Photographed by F. Monnier, the official photographer of Chamonix, whose studio produced a celebrated series of real-photograph postcards documenting the resort at the dawn of Alpine tourism, this unused card is a handsome artefact of the Belle Époque mountaineering era. The Hôtel des Étrangers was one of Chamonix's premier establishments, catering to the British, German, and American climbers and tourists who made the Chamonix valley famous from the 1860s onward.
