Postcard St. Mary's Church Luton England RPPC Oval Vignette c1905

Luton, England1905Pre-linenGood

A silvery sepia oval vignette frames St. Mary's Church, Luton, with the drama of a parish that has stood since the 13th century — its flint-panelled nave walls, grand Perpendicular Gothic windows, and stout embattled tower rising against a brooding English sky, a tree in fresh leaf leaning in from the left as if eavesdropping on centuries of history. The wrought-iron railings that ring the churchyard are crisp in the foreground, lending a sense of civic pride to what was then rapidly industrialising Luton, famed for its hat trade. Published by T. M. Luton and printed in Saxony, this unused oval-vignette card is a classic example of the Edwardian "platinotype-style" postcard aesthetic that collectors prize for its tonal delicacy.
