Postcard 1911 Queen Victoria Memorial Buckingham Palace London British Manufacture

London, England1912Pre-linenGood

Standing sentinel before the grand Portland stone façade of Buckingham Palace, the gleaming Queen Victoria Memorial dominates this crisp black-and-white Edwardian real-photo postcard — the winged Victory atop the column barely a decade old when this card was likely printed. The memorial, unveiled by King George V in May 1911 and designed by sculptor Thomas Brock, anchors the view magnificently, with allegorical figures of Truth, Justice, and Motherhood visible at its base. The wide forecourt is virtually empty of motor traffic, lending the scene an air of unhurried imperial grandeur that tourists of that era — perhaps a traveller named Edith or Arthur making the pilgrimage to the palace gates — would have eagerly posted home. The reverse carries a tidy descriptive caption noting that the Royal London Residence was built for George IV in 1826, that Edward VII was born and died there, and that the National Memorial was unveiled in 1911, providing a useful terminus post quem for dating the card. The stamp box reads "British Manufacture," and a dealer pencil notation "200" appears in the upper corner of the reverse.
