Postcard 1903 Roma Italy Temple of Vesta Fontana Clemente XI Real Photo Unused

Rome, Italy1903Pre-linenGood

A horse-drawn cart idles in the shadow of one of Rome's most ancient survivors — the circular Temple of Hercules Victor (long misidentified as the Temple of Vesta), its ring of Corinthian columns still nearly intact after two millennia, photographed here in sharp halftone relief against a pale Roman sky circa 1900–1903. To the left, the Baroque fountain erected by Pope Clement XI in the Piazza della Bocca della Verità anchors the composition, its triton figures mid-splash. The working cart and its attendants ground the ancient marble in vivid everyday Roman life, a quality that makes early photographic Roman postcards enduringly collectible. Published by I. Franceschi of Rome (catalogue no. 4858), this is an undivided-back card, placing it firmly in the pre-1907 era. A pencilled date "12-21-03" on the face likely indicates a purchase or receipt date of 21 December 1903. The back is clean and unused.
