A busy piazza stretches before Naples' original Stazione Centrale in this beautifully sharp real-photo postcard — pedestrians in dark overcoats cluster near the grand arcaded façade, a clock tower rises above the central portico, and the city hums with Edwardian-era energy. This is the old Naples Central Station, the neoclassical building that stood on Piazza Garibaldi until it was demolished and replaced by the current modernist structure; this image is therefore a precious document of vanished urban architecture. Numbered 62 in the Traldi series and bearing a faint photographer's credit in the lower right corner, the card captures the station at the height of its working life, when it was the gateway through which millions of southern Italians passed — many emigrating to America, others returning from the north.
