Postcard 1954 Chrome St. Peter's Vatican City Rome TWA Color-foto Mailed

Vatican City, Rome, Italy1954ChromeGood

Dispatched at 5 PM on a June evening in 1954, this vivid chrome-era TWA promotional card captures the full grandeur of St. Peter's Basilica — Michelangelo's soaring dome catching the Roman afternoon light, the Egyptian obelisk standing sentinel in the piazza, and tiny figures of tourists and cyclists dotting the sun-warmed travertine below. Produced as part of Trans World Airlines' ambitious "Color-foto" travel series designed to lure postwar Americans onto transatlantic flights, the card was postmarked at Princeton, West Virginia, and addressed to a "Mrs. John" at a Cook Avenue address — then re-directed in pencil to a Churchill Road, Richmond, Virginia address. On the back, a traveler named John dashes off an excited mid-flight note to his "Dearest Margaret," reporting they are descending into Shannon Airport for breakfast around 9 a.m., having had "a little snack on the plane," and marveling that the journey from London took under two hours — a thrilling novelty in the jet age's dawn. The card was franked with an Irish stamp, suggesting it was posted at Shannon during a layover, and carries the Princeton, WV receiving cancel dated June 24, 1954.
