Antique & Vintage Postcards

Postmarked New Orleans, May 1919, this gorgeous oversized souvenir folder — its cover illustrated with a lush bayou panorama, crescent moon emblem, and a painterly French Quarter courtyard — unfolds accordion-style to reveal a rich panorama of the Crescent City at its post-WWI peak: the bustling Canal Street teeming with streetcars and early automobiles, the massive Public Cotton Warehouses and Terminal of the Port of New Orleans (© 1914, Poole Bros.), a stately Tropical Palm at the entrance to Metairie Cemetery, and multiple views of public buildings and parks. Mailed with a 1-cent Washington stamp to a Margaret at 1123 Carroll Street in Baltimore, Maryland, with a postage-due stamp indicating an additional cent was owed — the sender, a William, inscribed the back panel in a confident hand. Produced by Curt Teich & Co. of Chicago, the folder encapsulates an era when New Orleans marketed itself aggressively as "The Paris of America."
