Postcard Linen Marjory Hendricks Water Gate Inn Washington DC Restaurant

Washington, D.C., USA1950LinenGood

Long before the name "Watergate" carried its notorious political connotations, it belonged to a beloved Washington D.C. restaurant perched on the Potomac — and this linen-era advertising postcard captures Marjory Hendricks' Water Gate Inn in all its cozy, candlelit charm. The front image draws the viewer into a warmly lit dining room alive with Pennsylvania Dutch character: rough-hewn ceiling beams, a crackling open-hearth fireplace stacked with seasoned logs, copper pots gleaming on the brick surround, blue-and-white Delftware displayed on a Welsh dresser, and tables set with cheerful red-and-white gingham cloths. The reverse identifies the restaurant as being "On-the-Potomac-at-F, N.W." with phone number DIstrict 7-9256, and credits Pennsylvania Dutch décor to designer Genevieve Hendricks, A.I.D. The menu listed specialties including Mennonite chicken baked in sour cream, rare roast beef, shrimp wiggle, and Dutch apple-cheese pie — a remarkable regional American menu. Published by Henry S. Fullerton 3rd of Westfield, NJ, this unused advertising card documents a cherished pre-scandal chapter of a name now synonymous with something else entirely.
