Cabinet Card c1895 Family Portrait Georg Schipper Wiesbaden Germany Phot Atelier

Wiesbaden, Germany1895Pre-linenFair-Good

A prosperous-looking young German family — a seated mother in a richly lace-trimmed blouse, a standing father with a neatly trimmed goatee in a dark frock coat, and a solemn toddler in a sailor-collared smock perched on a stool — gaze steadily into the lens of Georg Schipper's Photograph-Atelier at the fashionable Kochbrunnen address in Wiesbaden, circa 1893–1898, in this cabinet card that crossed borders to end up in a Cleveland, Ohio collection. The reverse bears the elaborate gilt and brown Schipper studio imprint with its ornate heraldic crest and the Saalgasse 36 entrance address, along with two blue rubber stamps from "P. Grünglück, Mittelgasse 31, Offenbach a.M." — possibly a later dealer or estate handler — and handwritten notations including what appears to be an inventory or price marking. No postcard use; this is a pure studio cabinet photograph.
