Antique & Vintage Postcards

Gold headdresses encrusted with frangipani blossoms, jewel-studded collars, and eyes lined with bold theatrical kohl — two performers of Bali's sacred Legong Kraton dance lock gazes in a moment of exquisite ceremonial tension, their gilded fans and embroidered costumes blazing against a dark stage. The Legong Kraton, performed since the 9th century and designated by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, was traditionally danced only by pre-pubescent girls chosen for their grace; by the mid-20th century it had also become Bali's signature performance for cultural tourism, and photographers like K. Sujana — whose copyright mark appears on the reverse — built cottage industries around capturing these dancers at their most resplendent. The second card in this pair zooms in to a striking close-up portrait of the lead dancer, her expression serene yet electric, the detail of her gilded crown and cascading chain earrings nearly filling the frame. Both cards are unused with clean, bright stock.
