Postcard 1955 Rothesay Isle of Bute Scotland Novelty Pull-Out Black Cats

Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Scotland1955ChromeGood

Two impossibly fluffy black kittens with sapphire eyes peer from a wicker basket festooned with white heather, a lucky horseshoe, and a swastika good-luck charm (the pre-WWII folk-luck symbol still appearing on British novelty cards into the 1950s) — above them the bold legend "Here's Lots of Luck from Rothesay, Isle of Bute." Lift the flap and a strip of crisp black-and-white real-photo views of Rothesay cascades down: the crowded Esplanade with rowing boats and the church spire; Ward Point and the Firth of Clyde from above Craigmore; East Princes Street and Craigmore Road; and further coastal panoramas of this beloved Clyde steamer resort. The card was posted on 5 August 1955 from Rothesay to Mrs. James Greenhill, 2456 4th Avenue West, Seattle 99, Washington, U.S.A. — a transatlantic missive from a holiday-maker who writes (in blue ink cramming every margin): "Dear Mum, thought you would like the pictures… found Mum had a big piano… Rothesay all day & all the day pretty… dear heart…" Two GB 2d Elizabeth II Wilding stamps frank the card at the correct 4d printed-paper foreign rate for 1955. The Valentine's "Mailing Novelty" format — "Shape Passed by the G.P.O. for Printed Paper Rate" — is printed on the back, a reassurance to postal clerks that this oddly-shaped pull-out card was legitimate mail.
