Postcard 1900s Borgo Italy Piazza St. Anna Stengel & Co Pre-Linen UDB

Borgo Valsugana, Trentino, Italy (then Austria-Hungary)1902Pre-linenGood

A hand-colored turn-of-the-century view transports you to a sun-warmed Italian market square — vendors' canvas awnings dot the cobblestones of Piazza St. Anna in Borgo (today's Borgo Valsugana, Trentino), while a hilltop castle presides over terracotta rooftops and vine-draped slopes in the background. Published by the prestigious Dresden firm Stengel & Co., whose meticulous chromolithography graced drawing rooms across Europe, this undivided-back card dates to the early 1900s when Borgo still belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire — a bilingual world reflected in the reverse's dual German/Italian text: Correspondenz-Karte / Cartolina di corrispondenza. The card was never sent, preserving the image side in crisp, unfaded color. The Castel Telvana ruin crowning the hill adds dramatic medieval depth to an already picturesque Alpine-Italian streetscape.
