Postcard c.1900 Venise Place Saint-Marc Venice Italy French Chicorée Advertising PMC

Venice, Italy1900Pre-linenFair

The waterfront grandeur of Venice's Piazzetta San Marco — the Doge's Palace staircase at right, the twin columns of the Molo, gondolas at the riva, and the distant dome of Santa Maria della Salute — is rendered in a soft photogravure-style print that feels more like a steel engraving than a photograph, giving this French promotional card an almost artistic gravitas. Issued as an advertising premium by Chicorée Extra "À la Belle Jardinière," manufactured by C. Bériot à Lille — one of the great French chicory coffee-substitute firms that flooded the market with collectible "trade cards" and postcards around 1900 — the reverse shows the striking red-printed brand name and a large adhesive residue where a label or coupon was once attached. Unused and unaddressed, this is a classic example of the French advertising postcard tradition that preceded modern loyalty programs.
