Postcard Bosnia Sarajevo Coppersmith Workshop Photochrom Kajon 1900s

Sarajevo, Bosnia (Austro-Hungarian Empire)1905Pre-linenGood

Glowing with the warm amber and gold of hammered brass and copper, this richly hand-tinted Photochrom postcard transports the viewer into a Sarajevo čaršija (bazaar) workshop where a craftsman named — by his red fez and leather apron — a traditional Bosnian bakardar bends over his anvil, tools in hand, while apprentices in scarlet shalvar trousers look on amid walls hung with gleaming trays, ewers, and candlesticks; it is a luminous document of the artisan culture that made Baščaršija famous long before the 1914 assassination that would put Sarajevo on the world's front pages. Published by Daniel A. Kajon of Sarajevo using the Photochrom process under Austro-Hungarian administration, the card's multilingual back — Cyrillic Dopisna karta, Correspondenz-Karte, Levelező-Lap, Carte Postale — perfectly encodes the polyglot empire that governed Bosnia after 1878, making this a coveted crossover piece for Austro-Hungarian, Bosnian, and Orientalist postcard collectors.
