Postcard 1902-10 Hawkshead Grammar School Lake District England Peacock Brand

Hawkshead, Cumbria, England, UK1906Pre-linenExcellent

Tucked into the quiet village of Hawkshead in England's Lake District, this small two-storey whitewashed Grammar School carries an outsized literary legacy — it is the school where a young William Wordsworth boarded and studied from 1779 to 1787, carving his name into a desk that visitors still seek out today. This charming tinted colour-collotype card, published under the prestigious "Peacock Brand" imprint of Pictorial Stationery Co., London, shows the school's distinctive leaded diamond-pane windows, Gothic arched doorway with a carved bracket above, and slate roof against a softly graduated pink-to-blue sky typical of Edwardian hand-coloured cards. The card is unused, its divided back printed with the Peacock Brand trade mark peacock device and instructions for ½d inland and 1d abroad postage rates — a format placing it firmly in the 1902–1910 Edwardian era. Numbered 1801 on the spine edge, it was likely part of a Lake District series. A perennial favourite with Wordsworth collectors, Lake District topography enthusiasts, and admirers of early British colour card printing.
