Postcard c1920 Abbotsford House Scotland Sir Walter Scott A.R. Edwards RPPC

Melrose (Abbotsford), Scottish Borders, Scotland1920RPPCFair-Good

Photographed from the southeast to reveal the full romantic silhouette of Abbotsford House against the wooded Borders hills, this sepia real-photo postcard preserves the baronial Scottish estate exactly as Sir Walter Scott designed it — turrets, crow-stepped gables, and ivy-clad arched gateway intact — a pilgrimage destination for literary tourists from the moment it was completed in 1825. Published and photographed by A. R. Edwards & Son of Selkirk, the local firm best positioned to document Scott's beloved home, the card carries a handwritten pencil note "Scotland" on its reverse, suggesting it was acquired as a souvenir and filed in a collection rather than mailed. The deckled paper texture and warm sepia tone place this firmly in the 1910s–1920s real-photo tradition.
