Postcard 1910 Casablanca Morocco Boulevard 4e Zouaves Clock Tower Levy & Neurdein

Casablanca, Morocco1910Pre-linenFair-Good

A panoramic street scene along the Boulevard du 4e Zouaves in Casablanca pulses with early colonial energy — horse-drawn carriages cluster before a grand European-style hotel, a clock tower rises above a Moorish arch at mid-frame, and a deep colonnade of slim pillars recedes to the right in crisp architectural perspective. This sepia phototypie captures Casablanca at the precise moment the French were remaking it into a modern colonial city following the 1907 bombardment, and the uneasy coexistence of Moroccan architectural ornament with Haussmann-inspired boulevards is legible in every detail. Published by the prestigious Paris house of Lévy & Neurdein Réunis — whose "LL" logo was a hallmark of quality — this card is numbered 163 in their Casablanca series and was printed at their 44 Rue Letellier atelier. The back is annotated "Morocco" and "K/AL" in pencil, consistent with a dealer's stock organisation, and the card is unused. Lévy & Neurdein cards of early French Morocco are among the most collected of all North African topographicals.
