Postcard 1920 Mogador Morocco Vue de la Plage Camel Caravan Beach La Civette

Mogador (Essaouira), Morocco1920Pre-linenGood

A laden camel caravan wades through the mirror-flat shallows of Mogador's beach at low tide, the city's ancient ramparts and a minaret silhouetted against a pale horizon — a composition of extraordinary stillness that ranks among the most evocative images ever made of what is now Essaouira. The sepia photograph, tinted with delicate washes of blue sky and warm sand tones, shows Moroccan traders moving goods along the tidal foreshore, a mode of transport unchanged for centuries and already becoming rare when this card was published by Editions La Civette, Mogador, as No. 42 in their beach views series. Mogador (Essaouira) was a major Atlantic trading port whose Jewish and Berber merchant communities gave it a cosmopolitan character unique along the Moroccan coast, and postcards of the city's famous windswept beach with its camel traffic were perennial bestsellers for European visitors. The riding figure atop a small donkey amid the camels, and the distant lone walker heading toward the city, give the scene a narrative depth that rewards close study.
