Postcard 1920s RPPC Algeria Sidi-Bou-Djenan Village Touggourt Desert Donkey

Touggourt, Algeria1925Pre-linenFair-Good

A lone rider on a small donkey picks a path through sun-bleached desert sand, palm fronds casting long dramatic shadows across the dunes as the mud-brick walls of Sidi-Bou-Djenan village shimmer in the background — a hauntingly beautiful scene from deep in the Algerian Sahara near Touggourt. Published by the prestigious "L'Afrique" artistic collection through Prouho of Hussein-Dey (Algiers), this sepia real-photograph-style postcard is a product of the golden age of French colonial North African photography, when publishers competed to capture the romance and solitude of the desert for European armchair travelers. The card was never mailed and retains its clean, unused reverse. A modern collector's annotation in pencil reads "Morocco" — an error, as the printed caption clearly identifies the village near Touggourt in eastern Algeria, a distinction meaningful to serious collectors of North African topographica.
