Postcard 1900s German Kamerun Douala Kaiser Birthday Canoe Race Colonial

Douala, Cameroon (German Kamerun)1905Pre-linenFair-Good

An extraordinary document of German colonial pageantry on the West African coast: this early undivided-to-divided-back era postcard captures the Kaisergeburtstagsfeier — the Kaiser's Birthday celebration — held at Duala (modern Douala) in the German protectorate of Kamerun (Cameroon), with dozens of long war canoes cutting across the estuary in a "Kanuwettrudern" (canoe racing competition) while two festively bunting-draped steamships ride at anchor behind them. The scene is alive with imperial spectacle — the steamers dressed overall with pennant strings, African paddlers racing in the equatorial heat for the entertainment of German colonial administrators on shore. This annual January 27th celebration of Kaiser Wilhelm II's birthday was a fixture of German colonial life across Africa until the protectorate fell to British and French forces in 1916. The card is unused, its back printed in the tri-lingual "Postkarte — Carte Postale / Union postale universelle / Weltpostverein" format typical of German colonial-era cards circa 1900–1914. A rare and historically significant colonial Africa subject with strong crossover appeal among maritime, German colonial, and Cameroon collectors.
