Antique & Vintage Postcards

Two silhouetted figures ride the surge of Atlantic breakers in a narrow pirogue, their boat's elegant upswept prow slicing through the foam as they return from a day's fishing off the Dakar coast — a timeless image of Senegalese maritime life captured in stark, almost cinematic black-and-white by the prolific Fortier collection that documented French West Africa in the early twentieth century. Published as card number 88 in the "Afrique Occidentale (Sénégal)" series by the Collection générale Fortier of Dakar, this gelatin silver or collotype print carries the raw energy of the surf and the skill of the Lebou fishermen who have worked these waters for centuries. The card is unused, its back printed simply "Carte Postale / Correspondance / Adresse" with a small publisher's emblem at the foot — consistent with Fortier's production circa 1905–1915. Edmond Fortier was the most important commercial photographer operating in French West Africa during this era, and his numbered series cards are actively collected worldwide for their ethnographic and photographic quality. A beautiful and evocative piece of early African documentary photography on postcard stock.
