Postcard Lion Gates Hampton Court Palace England 1900s Gale & Polden

Hampton Court, Surrey, England1905Pre-linenGood

Flanked by a pair of imperious stone lions perched atop rusticated piers, the Lion Gates of Hampton Court Palace stand frozen in this crisp Edwardian-era postcard — a scene little changed since William III commissioned the baroque ironwork gates in the 1690s. The photograph captures the elaborate wrought-iron gate panels and the sweeping curved walls that anchor the composition, with mature English oaks pressing close behind, their canopies creating a theatrical dark backdrop that makes the pale stonework almost luminous. Published by the esteemed military and topographic house Gale & Polden of London and Aldershot, this unused card (catalogue number 12032) belongs to their well-regarded series of British heritage views. The Lion Gates, situated on the Kingston Road (north) side of the palace grounds, were a favourite postcard subject in the 1900s–1910s and this example shows exceptional clarity for the period.
