Antique & Vintage Postcards

Bare winter trees frame the still, pewter-grey waters of the River Avon as Warwick Castle rises dramatically on the far bank in this hauntingly atmospheric real-photo postcard — the medieval Caesar's Tower and Guy's Tower unmistakable against a brooding English sky. Photographed by J. J. Ward of Coventry, this RPPC carries the quiet poetry of an off-season visit, the kind a day-tripper named Dorothy or Harold might have made on a crisp January afternoon, returning to their lodgings to send this card home as proof of the adventure. Ward was a prolific local commercial photographer active in the Coventry and Warwickshire region in the early twentieth century, producing fine-grain silver-gelatin real-photo cards of regional subjects. A small boathouse or storage shed sits on the right bank, grounding the romantic medieval silhouette with everyday Edwardian life. The reverse is printed "Special Photo-Art Series No. 2036, Copyright J. J. Ward, Coventry — Printed in England," with a dealer pencil mark of "15¢." The card is unused.
