The card was distributed as a compliment of Hogg, Brown & Taylor, a dry goods emporium occupying the substantial address of 477 to 481 Washington Street, Boston — right in the thick of that city's great retail corridor of the Gilded Age. These cards were handed to customers as goodwill tokens, and the whimsical fairy-tale imagery of children playing among giant seashells and starfish was perfectly calibrated to delight both children and their shopping mothers. The reverse is clean and crisp, printed in neat serif type with the firm's full name and address.
