Postcard 1909 Fawns Leap Catskill Mountains NY Rotograph UDB Pre-Linen

Palenville / Catskill Mountains, New York, USA1909Pre-linenGood

Two massive moss-draped cliff faces press together in a dramatic narrow gorge at Fawns Leap — one of the Catskills' most photogenic rock formations near Palenville — with a single resilient tree silhouetted against the pale sky above, the whole scene rendered in rich hand-tinted color by the celebrated Rotograph Company. Fawns Leap, where Cauterskill Creek plunges through a tight rock cleft, was a popular excursion stop for the grand Catskill resort era, when hotels like the Catskill Mountain House drew urban vacationers by the thousands. Written directly on the image face, a traveler named E. (last initial only) tells a recipient she "just thought you might write!" before declaring "this country is beautiful" — a sentiment any hiker through the gorge today would still echo. The Catskill, N.Y. postmark is dated July 30, 1909, and the undivided-back format plus Rotograph imprint confirm the golden age of American deltiology.
