RD Hubbard Co Superlative Flour Trade Card 1880s Mankato MN Girl Winter Postcard

Mankato, Minnesota, USA1884Pre-linenPoor-Fair

A ruddy-cheeked girl in a tawny fur-trimmed coat and brown cap reaches up to pluck bright red berries from a snow-dusted branch on this evocative chromolithograph trade card for R.D. Hubbard & Co.'s Superlative Flour — her rosy face turned in profile against a pale winter landscape of bare trees and soft drifts, the cheerful pop of red berries and her pink-hemmed skirt the only warmth in an otherwise silver-grey scene. The card advertises Hubbard's Superlative Flour, milled in Mankato, Minnesota, and sold through wholesale agents E.G. Stoddard & Co. of New Haven, Connecticut — a reminder of how the post-Civil War rail network knit Minnesota grain to New England kitchens. The reverse carries Hubbard's branded flour sack circular stamp (No. 196), the tagline "Warranted to Equal the Best in the World," and the full Stoddard wholesale imprint. The front has significant foxing and paper loss to the central figure, though the child's face and the winter background retain charm.
