Antique & Vintage Postcards

A prim young girl fans herself with a brilliant yellow fan while an elderly spectacled woman in a mob cap crouches behind her to inspect the sweeping blue skirt — the comedic tension perfectly mirrors the Victorian obsession with fabric and trim quality. This vibrant chromolithograph trade card promoted Star Braid, an alpaca braid manufactured to such a high standard that it earned the Highest Award and Diploma at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876. The reverse reproduces the official Report on Awards signed by judge Elliot C. Cowdin and certified by Francis A. Walker, Chief of the Bureau of Awards, under authority of the United States Centennial Commission — a remarkable primary-source document in miniature. The Star Braid trade-mark circle, with its five-pointed star and the legend "Ask For It," appears prominently in the foreground. The card is a superb artifact of America's most celebrated world's fair, and the back text is essentially a facsimile of a government award certificate, making it doubly collectible for both trade-card enthusiasts and Centennial Exposition collectors.
