Antique & Vintage Postcards

Against a gleaming gold-metallic background, a vivacious young girl in a brilliantly colored Spanish-style costume — pink ruffled skirt, turquoise bodice, crescent moon hat — blows soap bubbles using a giant spool of Star Braid thread as her wand, the bubbles catching the brand's trademark star motif as they float away. This spectacular chromolithograph trade card for Star Braid, patented June 25, 1878, is among the more visually arresting examples of late-Victorian advertising art: the gold metallic ground, the embossed spool label reading "Ask — The Best — For It Again," and the kinetic energy of the figure make it a standout piece. The reverse has been stripped of a previously glued layer, leaving a heavily textured white surface with significant paper loss — suggesting this card spent decades in a Victorian scrapbook before being removed. The front retains its metallic luster and chromolithographic brilliance remarkably well.
