A.S.T. Co. Children's Shoe Trade Card 1880s Cat Birds Nest Chromolithograph

Poughkeepsie, New York, USA1884Pre-linenGood

A tabby kitten crouches in wide-eyed mischief, one paw reaching toward a baby bird fallen from its nest — a shoe — while the frantic parent robin swoops in with wings spread wide and two fledglings scatter into the blossoming branches above: it is a miniature drama of domestic peril rendered in glorious Victorian chromolithography. The advertisement cleverly plays on the pun embedded in its tagline: "A Child's Shoe without the A.S.T. Co. Black-Tip Upon the Toe does not even make a safe Bird's Nest." The reverse identifies the retailer as D. L. Heaton & Son, dealers in Boots, Shoes and Slippers, with a partial address in what appears to be Poughkeepsie, New York, specializing in A.S.T. Co. children's shoes ("They Double the Value of the Shoe"). The American Steel Tip Company (A.S.T. Co.) was a well-known late-19th-century manufacturer of reinforced toe-cap hardware that extended shoe life for active children — a practical selling point dressed up in charming animal illustration. The front chromolithography is among the finest of any card in this batch, with rich greens, reds, and naturalistic animal rendering.
