Domestic Sewing Machine Co Trade Card 1880s Horse Rochester by Aberdeen

United States1885Pre-linenFair-Good

A magnificent dark bay horse — Rochester by Aberdeen — stands in alert, noble profile against a sun-drenched paddock, his glossy coat rendered with the careful tonal gradations of a skilled lithographer's hand; this is not merely a commercial give-away but a portrait worthy of a racing stable's wall. The card was issued as a compliment of the Domestic Sewing Machine Company (S.M. Co.), one of the major American sewing-machine manufacturers of the post-Civil War era, headquartered in New York. The reverse advertises the company's attachments box that accompanied every "Domestic" sewing machine with the new-style woodwork — a set of presser feet, gauges, needles, and thread guides that attached without a screwdriver, a genuine selling innovation of the period. Rochester by Aberdeen was a real trotting stallion of some renown in the 1880s–1890s, making this card doubly collectible for both sewing-machine ephemera collectors and equestrian/harness-racing enthusiasts. Some album adhesive damage on the reverse; the front is bright and well-preserved with only a hairline crease.
