Postcard 1920s Linen Along the Palisades Santa Monica California Coast Road

Santa Monica, California, USA1920Pre-linenExcellent

A lone horseback rider picks their way along a cliff-hugging dirt road while a boxy early automobile — its white-walled spare tire mounted proudly on the rear — idles just ahead, both travelers dwarfed by the dramatic pink-tinged sandstone Palisades bluffs of Santa Monica in this gorgeous hand-colored linen-era postcard. The Pacific glitters ice-blue below the cliffside, a gnarled agave spike reaching skyward from a rocky promontory hedged by a rustic wooden rail fence — the whole scene radiating that golden-era Southern California fantasy that drew millions westward in the boom decades before the Second World War. Published by Western Publishing & Novelty Co. of Los Angeles under catalogue number A.91654, the card's back carries the classic period postage indicia specifying one cent domestic / two cents foreign, which pins manufacture to before the 1925 rate change — making this likely a mid-to-late 1910s or very early 1920s production. The road depicted is the old Palisades cliffside drive that predates Pacific Coast Highway; the scene is virtually unrecognizable today, lending the card powerful documentary value. Unused and pristine, no message or address has been written.
