Antique & Vintage Postcards

A warm amber sunset blazes behind the soaring Perpendicular Gothic tower of Gloucester Cathedral, rendered in lush chromolithographic colour by the accomplished topographical painter Arthur C. Payne — one of the most prolific cathedral artists of the Edwardian era. The massive central tower, completed around 1460, dominates a skyline of pointed pinnacles and tracery, while a Georgian townhouse peeks through foreground trees, grounding the scene in the living city below. Gloucester Cathedral is forever tied to royal history: it is the burial place of King Edward II, and its cloisters famously served as filming locations for Harry Potter. Payne's warm palette — burning orange sky, deep olive foliage — captures the cathedral at its most theatrical. The card was published by S. Hildesheimer & Co. Ltd. of London and Manchester, a prominent Anglo-German firm whose high-quality art postcards were collected widely in the Edwardian period; this example is unused and retains vivid colour.
